Understanding your results: what are net carbs?

Net carbs refer to the total amount of carbohydrates that impact blood sugar levels. While total carbohydrates include all forms of carbs – fiber, sugar, and sugar alcohols – not all of these are fully digested or absorbed by the body.

A lower net carb count means fewer digestible carbs, which can be beneficial for weight loss, blood sugar and insulin control, and ketogenic diets. If you're in the US or Canada, food labels include fiber in total carbs, so subtracting it is necessary (and is reflected in this calculator if you indicate you're in a different country).

Benefits of knowing your carbs

Understanding your net carbs can help you with:

  • Weight management – Helps with following low-carb and ketogenic diets.
  • Blood sugar control – Important for people with diabetes or those managing insulin resistance.
  • Better digestion – Prioritises fiber intake, which is essential for good gut health.
  • Smart food choices – Helps differentiate between high-fiber carbs and rapidly digestible sugars.

How are net carbs calculated?

The formula for calculating net carbs is:Net carbs = Total carbs - fiber - (½ sugar alcohols)

However, some sugar alcohols (like erythritol) have zero impact on blood sugar and should not be subtracted in the same way.

How to calculate your carbs manually?

  • Step 1 – Find the total carbohydrates on the nutrition label.
  • Step 2 – Subtract the fiber (since it’s not fully digested).
  • Step 3 – Subtract ½ of the sugar alcohols (unless using erythritol, which is fully subtracted).
Sample Net Carbs Calculation
1
Find your values on the nutrition label
Total carbs=30g
Fiber=10g
Sugar alcohols=6g
2
Subtract dietary fiber
30 – 10=20g
3
Subtract half the sugar alcohols
20 – (6 ÷ 2)=17g net carbs
If using erythritol or other fully non-digestible sugar alcohol, subtract entirely: 30 – 10 – 6 = 14g net carbs

Can I use the net carbs calculator to lose weight?

The net carbs calculator can be a valuable tool for weight loss, especially if you're following a low-carb or ketogenic diet. By tracking net carbs instead of total carbs, you can focus on consuming more fiber-rich, nutrient-dense foods while minimising refined sugars and fast-digesting carbohydrates that can lead to blood sugar spikes and cravings. Reducing your net carb intake can help you control hunger, improve energy levels, and promote fat burning.
