I studied the body and brain for decades. When mine failed me, I learned more in recovery than any textbook could ever teach me.

Dr Bill Sukala

PhD Scientist. Recovering patient.

For decades I worked as a clinician, researcher, educator, and media health commentator. Then over twelve years of unexplained fatigue, brain fog, and muscle loss turned out to be a pituitary tumour that doctors repeatedly missed.

I became obsessed with my recovery. Becoming a patient forced me to apply the science I'd been teaching for years to my own broken physiology. I devoured research on the brain, performance, and everything that affects it.

I decided to rebuild this site around what I think matters most: the intersection of brain health, physical performance, and the science of how people actually change.

How I Got Here

For twelve years I had progressively worsening symptoms I couldn't explain. Fatigue that sleep couldn't fix. Brain fog that made simple tasks feel insurmountable. Muscle wasting despite training consistently. Doctors ran tests, offered diagnoses, and sent me on my way. Nothing improved. Some told me it was stress. Others suggested depression. A few implied I was imagining it.

In August 2022, a more progressive doctor ordered a hormone blood test on a hunch. The results suggested a tumour. A referral to an endocrinologist and an MRI confirmed it - a prolactinoma that had been sitting at the base of my brain for over a decade. Suddenly, everything added up. Fatigue, brain fog, the muscle loss, the episodes of depression and anxiety despite having no obvious reason to feel that way - all of it traced back to one small tumour that had been missed repeatedly.

With medication, I was able to shrink the tumour and restore my hormone balance. I regained around 9kg of lean muscle I had lost over the previous decade. My energy came back. My body started responding to training again. I was recovering, but the challenges didn't stop there.

I learned that the brain doesn't reset that easily. Years of disrupted hormones had created stubborn thinking patterns. While fighting to escape what I call my "wilderness years", I spent years relearning the neuroscience of habit formation, mindset, and behaviour change. Not as a clinician, but as a patient trying to feel better again. I experimented, failed, adjusted, and slowly rebuilt my life.

That experience changed how I understand health. Academically, I knew the body and the brain are not separate projects. But now I felt it. What happens in your brain drives everything else — your energy, your motivation, your physical performance.

Most health content treats the brain as an afterthought. I spent twelve years learning why that's wrong. Everything on this site — the articles, the tools, the research — exists because of that education, and because most people deserve access to it without having to get sick first.

What This Means For You

You've probably noticed that most health content skips the hard questions. Why can't I make the changes I know I need to make? Why does my body feel like it's working against me? I spent twelve years asking those questions as a patient while knowing the clinical answers weren't enough.
